Kampala Roads

Have you tried to cross the road in Kampala?
It’s like no other road you may have tried to pass
A never ending stream of motorbikes and packed vans
take that first step or else you may never start.

Have you ever taken a Boda on the roads of Kampala?
You better hold on and pray to the god of your choice
The boda man slithers through non existent gaps
As the horn of speeding trucks overpower your voice.

Have you ever driven a car through the roads of Kampala?
Or navigated the city through Fridays rush hour
As Fellow drivers demur any notion of structure
And a blackout to the grid leaves the city with no power.

Oh Kampala, the heart of the African pearl!
A city like none I have embraced before
The chaos of the roads becomes weirdly addictive
I shall take my leave now but I’ll be back for sure.

Inspiration

I was living in the heart of the Ugandan capital city in a hostel that my cousin owned. I went out a few times each day for a walk and to embrace the pulse of the streets. Every time I stepped out to greet these roads, they roared back at me ceaselessly. The thousands of cars, bikes, vans and buses were never ending, they were the blood that flowed through the arteries of this city.
